Jon and Kate Gosselin are famous for their reality television stint in the early 2000s on a show called “Jon and Kate plus 8.” The couple split in 2009, but conflicts over how the couple would split time with their famous children continue. The most recent conflict involved a heated discussion that led to police involvement.

The discussion was over which parent should have custody of one of the children on a particular day. According to a report in the International Business Times, the conflict was referred to the country district attorney who reviewed the order and stated that it was “sufficiently vague” to cause the confusion.

Ultimately, the 13 year-old child was allowed to choose which parent to go home with.

These types of frustrations are not limited to the famous. Every couple with children that goes through a divorce may face similar issues. Three lessons that couples can learn from Jon & Kate’s repeated child custody conflicts include:

  • Review the agreement. Child custody arrangements are not always easy to follow. Take the time to review the agreement and make sure you understand it. Have your attorney go over it and explain anything that seems unclear.
  • Follow the rules. Once you know what is expected, do your best to follow the arrangement.
  • Consider a modification. If the arrangement is not working out, consider a modification. A modification can be used to restructure the original agreement.

Putting together a child custody agreement can be an intimidating process. A child custody and visitation attorney can help to structure an agreement that not only preserves the best interests of the children, but also meets your needs.
